Pakistan is ready to host 7th the Commonwealth Taekwondo Championship for the first time in the history of sports in January 2016 here at the Pakistan Sports Complex Islamabad .Addressing to crowded press conference here in a local hotel at Islamabad, the President Pakistan Taekwondo Federation, Lt. Col. (R) Waseem Ahmed, said that during the World Taekwondo Championship 2015 held in Russia he managed to have some congenial meetings with the designated officials and personnel of World Taekwondo federation, Asian Taekwondo Union and with Continental Taekwondo Presidents for the allotment of this event. President Pakistan Taekwondo Federation said that before that Pakistan had placed a formal bid for the mega event after taking consent from the Ministry of IPC through PSB and President Pakistan Olympic Association Lt Gen (Retd) Syed Arif Hassan (HI) Military, he said. He stated that this Championship will further support the Government’s stance to promote sporting culture in the country. President Pakistan Taekwondo Federation, Lt. Col. (R) Waseem Ahmed, said that a total of 85 million will be needed to host this mega event and if Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC) gives up the 25% of this amount we will be very grateful to them. The rest we will generate from the private sponsors he said. President Pakistan Taekwondo Federation, Lt. Col. (R) Waseem Ahmed, said that he will be requesting the Army and Navy to provide security for the mega event. ‘’We will be asking the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) to help us in getting the equipment for the mega event’’ he said. President Pakistan Taekwondo Federation, Lt. Col. (R) Waseem Ahmed, said that this is definitely going to be a mega event in country’s sporting history as officials and athletes from all continents will be featuring in the mega event. The member countries of World Children Taekwondo Union (CTU) will be invited in the event. He said this huge event will add steadily to the social and economic development of the country. This will also be a puff of fresh breeze for those who are striving hard for the holding of International Sports in Pakistan said.
.He further stated that they would need a large amount of funds to hold the event. “I have submitted a letter to the ministry of inter-provincial coordination (IPC) in this respect and the ministry has given us the green signal,” Waseem said, there is need for international events in the country. “Hosting an event benefits a country in many ways. It not only boosts the confidence level of the local players when they win medals but it also builds the image of a country as it hosts sports dignitaries from across the world,” he said. The PTF President also revealed that Taekwondo Promotion Foundation would give Pakistan taekwondo mats. “During last visit to Tashkent for attending the ATU council meeting, I requested chairman of Taekwondo Foundation Dai Soon Lee to give us a few mats and he agreed,” said Waseem.“If we get a few mats from them, then we plan to give them to a few deserving clubs. During the last few years, we have given quite a few mats to the provinces and it’s time to also support the clubs,” he added. The PTF President stated that in Tashkent he also had a meeting with the presidents of taekwondo federations of Iran, Korea and Uzbekistan and told them that they should support Pakistan in terms of training of their athletes. Pakistan has never hosted such a mega event in any sports discipline. Pakistan Taekwondo Federation PTF president Lt Col Wasim Ahmed , who is also the executive member of Commonwealth Taekwondo Union (CTU), did a marvelous job to secure such a high-level spectacle for the country after getting the support of taekwondo chiefs of several countries, including Australia, England, Scotland and Hong Kong.As many as 78 nations are affiliated with the CTU, so it would be a big event. “We will need support of the government and the corporate sector. I am optimistic we will get assistance from them for the competitions,” Wasim said. He said: “Sports development cannot be done without the involvement of the government. The Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships are held every two years, in every year the Commonwealth and Olympic Games are held. They are sanctioned by the Commonwealth Taekwondo Union, the Commonwealth Games Federation and the World Taekwondo Federation and involve world class competitors, making them a major event in Taekwondo.
The first Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships were held in Brisbane, Queensland, on 14 and 15 October 2006. The host was Taekwondo Australia Inc.In 2008, the Taekwondo Championships were held from November 21 to 23 at the MTS Center in Canada. The 3rd Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships were held in Brisbane, Australia .The award for the placing in the Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships are medals.
Taekwondo is now a Category 2 Commonwealth Games Sport and may feature in future Commonwealth Games.
