The United States has its own national cricket team,In 2004, the United States cricket team played a first-class match as part of the first ICC Intercontinental Cup. The matches against Canada and Bermuda were the first in many years.The team won the ICC 6 Nations Challenge beating Scotland, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the UAE on net run rate by 0.028 of a run.Winning the ICC Six Nations meant that they qualified for the ICC Champions Trophy 2004 in England. Here the USA played their first ever One Day International match against New Zealand at The Oval on September 10, 2004.The US side was beaten by New Zealand and lost to Australia in the tournament, as well.The 2005 ICC Trophy represented a chance for the USA to re-establish themselves on the world stage and qualify for the 2007 World Cup. A poor showing saw them finish at the bottom of their group, with four losses and a match abandoned due to rain from their five group fixtures. This failure robbed the USA of the prize of full One Day International status on offer to the World Cup qualifiers.This failure was compounded on August 9, 2005 when the ICC expelled the USA from the 2005 ICC Intercontinental Cup.The USA made their return to international cricket in August 2006 when they participated in Division One of the ICC Americas Championship in Canada. A New York newspaper from 1739 contains an advertisement for cricket players and the first documented competition occurred in 1751 in Manhattan. Cricket received a significant amount of media coverage at the time. The sport was played in approximately 125 cities in 22 states. Roughly 500 officially established clubs existed and it is probable that in 1860 there were 10,000 boys and men in America who had actively played the sport for at least a season.The Dartmouth College students were playing cricket on the Green by 1793. Haverford College formed a cricket team in 1833. In recent years Haverford is one of the few post secondary institutions to field a cricket team at the varsity level, hence most of Haverford’s opponents are collegiate club level teams. Clubs from the United States and Canada participated in one of the first international cricket matches on record in 1844 in Bloomingdale Park in Manhattan.In 2004 Pro Cricket was organized as a professional Twenty 20 format league with eight teams in two divisions. The ICC recognized the USACA as an associate member starting in 1965. In 2005 the USACA was suspended from an ICC sponsored annual conference due to problems with USACA elections, but that suspension was lifted in March 2006. In 2007 the USACA was again suspended by the ICC because of problems with its administration and constitution, but was again recognized beginning on April 1, 2008.The national association organizes play within and between seven regional conferences,which may contain several leagues. A league is a group of 8 or more teams that play according to a schedule. Another reason was that in 1909 when the ICC was originally organized as the Imperial Cricket Conference it was open only to Commonwealth nations and thereby excluded the US from participating in the sport at the highest level.Nevertheless in 1965 the US was admitted to the renamed ICC as an associate member and the sport grew in popularity in the second half of the 20th century. An oft mentioned reason for the growing popularity of cricket is the growing population of immigrants to the US who come from cricket playing nations.With the launching of the United States Youth Cricket Association in 2010, a more focused effort to bring the game to American schools was begun, with the intention of broadening cricket’s fan base beyond expatriates and their children.USA finished sixth in the 2001 ICC Trophy, their best performance to date. The dispute was resolved in early 2008, and the suspension was lifted on April 1 of that year. The team’s reinstatement permitted them to enter the World Cricket League in Division Five for 2008 in Jersey. The team made it through the Group Stage tied for first in their division with a 4–0–0 record (one match abandoned)but lost both their semi-final match with Jersey and their third-place play-off with Nepal.The USA finished second in the 2010 Division Five after losing the final against Nepal and won promotion to 2010 Division Four. They continued their climb in more emphatic style by finishing first in 2010 Division Four, demolishing Italy in the final. They were promoted to 2011 Division Three where they took last place and were relegated to 2012 Division Four.The ICC Champions Trophy is a One Day International (ODI) cricket tournament organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC), second in importance only to the Cricket World Cup. It was inaugurated as the ICC Knock Out Tournament in 1998 and has been played approximately every two years since, its name was changed to the Champions Trophy in 2002. The number of teams competing has varied over the years; originally all the ICC’s full members took part, and from 2000 to 2004 associate members were also involved. Since 2009, the tournament has only involved the eight highest-ranked ODI teams as of six months prior to the tournament. Despite positive responses to the 2013 tournament and earlier press speculation,[1] the ICC confirmed that the 2013 Champions Trophy was to be the last, with its place in the cricketing calendar taken by a new ICC World Test Championship.[2] However in January 2014, it was confirmed by the ICC that a Champions Trophy tournament will take place in 2017 and the proposed World Test Championship has been cancelled.The ESPN has been stepping up its coverage of cricket in recent years, buying the cricket website Cricinfo in 2007, and broadcasting the final of the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 competition, the 2014 Indian Premier League, English County Championship games, and international test cricket.
