South Asian Games: Prime Minister Youth Program strives to provide opportunities for youth.
(Asghar Ali Mubarak) The development, prosperity, and mental and physical health of any country and its society can be gauged by the splendor of its sports fields
Sports are not just entertainment; they are a global diplomatic and social tool with the power to transform an environment of war and conflict into peace, bridge gaps between nations, and channel the energies of the younger generation in a positive direction.
Pakistan, one of the youngest countries in the world in terms of population, with more than 60 percent of its population being youth, is currently at a very important juncture in the history of sports. The recent important meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office, Islamabad, in which the Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Program, Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan, met with the President of the Pakistan Olympic Association and the South Asia Olympic Council, Arif Saeed, is clear evidence that Pakistan has entered the field with a new determination to revive and dominate sports in the region. In this meeting, it was officially and historically announced that the 14th South Asian Games will be held in Pakistan from 3 to 11 April 2027. This event is not just a sports competition for Pakistan, but it is a wonderful and historic opportunity to present the peaceful, progressive, and sports-loving face of the country to the world.
The Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Program, Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan, has announced that the 14th South Asian Games will be held in the cities of Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar in Pakistan. 3,200 athletes from the region will participate in 346 events in 28 sports in these games, which aim to highlight the talents of the youth and promote regional friendship. The Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Program says that the South Asian Games provide an excellent and historic opportunity to bring the hidden talents of our young athletes to the world. Providing maximum opportunities to the youth to advance in the field of sports is the need of the hour. The Government of Pakistan is taking all necessary and vigorous steps for this purpose. The Prime Minister’s Youth Program for the South Asian Games is trying to provide opportunities to the youth, because these games are an important means of promoting friendship, cooperation and sports culture between the countries of the region. In an important meeting with the South Asian Games delegation and the President of the Pakistan Olympic Association and South Asia Olympic Council, Arif Saeed, at the Prime Minister’s Office, a detailed discussion was held on the promotion of sports in Pakistan and preparations for the regional competitions to be held next year. During the meeting, Chairman Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan officially announced that the 14th South Asian Games will be held in Pakistan from April 3 to 11, 2027. These games will include 346 medal competitions in 28 different sports. In which about 3,200 athletes from the region will showcase their talents. These sports competitions will be jointly held in Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar. The South Asian Games provide an excellent and historic opportunity for our young athletes to showcase their hidden talents to the world. He clarified that providing maximum opportunities to the youth to advance in the field of sports is the need of the hour, and the Government of Pakistan is taking all necessary and vigorous steps for this purpose. On this occasion, President of the Pakistan Olympic Association Arif Saeed said that providing equal opportunities to young athletes to advance at the national, regional and international levels is our top priority. He expressed his determination that Pakistan will spare no effort to make the hosting of these games memorable. The South Asian Games (also known as SAIF Games or SAF Games in the past) were started in Kathmandu, Nepal, in 1984. Its main objective was to promote peace, friendship, and cooperation among the SAARC countries, namely Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Maldives, through sports. Pakistan had previously successfully hosted these games in 1989 and 2004. After 2004, that is, after a gap of almost two decades, this mega event is once again going to be held on Pakistani soil. The 2027 games reiterate Pakistan’s resolve that despite all the regional and geopolitical challenges, Pakistan is ready to become an ambassador of peace in the region through sports. According to Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan, the 14th South Asian Games will be the biggest sports competition in Pakistan’s history in terms of its scope and arrangements. Looking at the infrastructure of these games, the following important features emerge: Date and Duration: These games will continue from April 3 to April 11, 2027, during which the entire country will be colored in the colors of sports. 28 different sports have been included in this mega event, which will be the best combination of both traditional and modern sports. A total of 346 medal competitions will be held, which will provide ample opportunities for athletes to showcase their skills and win medals. About 3,200 athletes and officials from more than 7 countries in the region will come to Pakistan to be a part of this event. The most beautiful thing about this event is that it will not be limited to any one city. Three major and historic cities of Pakistan—Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar—will jointly host the Games. It is a wise decision to divide the Games among three different cities. This will not only provide an opportunity to modernize the sports infrastructure in different parts of the country but will also showcase Pakistan’s diverse cultural colors to the world. With its magnificent sports complex and international standard facilities, Islamabad will be the center of attention for hosting the opening and closing ceremonies as well as major athletics and indoor games. The city will convey a message to foreign delegations that Pakistan is peaceful and orderly. Lahore, the capital of Punjab, famous for its traditional sports (such as kabaddi and wrestling) and magnificent stadiums for cricket and hockey, will be the center of traditional excitement. Lahore’s culture and hospitality will prove to be a memorable experience for foreign athletes.
Hosting the Games in Peshawar is a declaration that Pakistan has won the war on terrorism and established peace. When the talented youth of Peshawar and its stadiums welcome international players, it will be the biggest proof of Pakistan’s changing situation for the global media.
The Prime Minister’s Youth Program is an important project in the history of Pakistan that aims to provide the youth with the resources to move forward in the field of education, employment, skills, and sports. Under the leadership of Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan, this program has included the development of sports among its top priorities.
The stance of the Chairman Youth Program is absolutely correct that “providing maximum opportunities to the youth to move forward in the field of sports is the need of the hour”.
The tragedy of Pakistan has been that there is no dearth of talent in the streets here, but due to a lack of proper schooling, grounds, and sports academies, this talent does not come to the fore at the global level. The South Asian Games 2027 will prove to be an “Opportunity of the Century” to carve out these hidden diamonds and bring them to the world.
Thinking beyond sports: Hosting the South Asian Games 2027 will not only benefit Pakistan in the field of sports, but will also have far-reaching effects on the country’s economy and foreign policy. Sports are an excellent means of diplomacy in the current era. Despite the political tensions between Pakistan and India, such sports events bring the people and athletes of both countries closer. When athletes from all countries of the region come to Pakistan, it will promote regional cooperation and help break the SAARC stalemate. The arrival of thousands of foreign guests, journalists, and fans will boost sports tourism in Pakistan. The hotel industry, transport, local handicrafts, and food and beverage businesses will flourish. In addition, the renovation of stadiums and the construction of new sports infrastructure are creating thousands of new employment opportunities at the local level. When the international media shows foreign athletes laughing and having adventures on the streets of Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar, negative propaganda against Pakistan will end. This event will show the world that Pakistan is a peaceful, safe, and sports-friendly country. Organizing such a large-scale event is no easy task. It faces major challenges such as security, logistics, accommodation of athletes, preparation of tracks and courts as per international standards, and strict implementation of anti-doping rules. The statement of Pakistan Olympic Association President Arif Saeed that “providing equal opportunities to young athletes to progress at the national, regional and international levels is our top priority” and his commitment that “Pakistan will spare no effort to make hosting these games a memorable one” are very encouraging. Pakistan’s sports federations and the government need to come together to be on the same page to avoid any kind of administrative lapse.
What do we need to do? The following steps are essential to make the 2027 Games the most successful event in Pakistan’s history: Immediate launch of talent hunt programs: In the next few months, a nationwide talent hunt should be launched under the Prime Minister’s Youth Program to select the best athletes from the grassroots level and train them under the supervision of international coaches.
Pakistan should not only host, but also achieve a prominent position in the medal race.
The stadiums of Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar should be made compatible with the latest technology, digital scoreboards and international standards. Along with the government, Pakistan’s large private institutions and corporate sector should come forward to sponsor these games so that there is no shortage of funds. The dream of a bright and sporting Pakistan: The 14th South Asian Games 2027 can be the harbinger of a new revolution in Pakistan’s sports culture. These games will assure our youth that their future is not bleak, but that the government and state institutions are working to make their dreams come true. When 3,200 players from South Asia come together under the banner of peace and friendship on the soil of Pakistan in April 2027, that spectacle will send a message to the world that Pakistan is the cradle of sports and its youth have the full potential to prove their talents in any field in the world. Pakistan has successfully hosted these games in 1998 and 2004, and now the re-organization of this mega event after two decades reiterates the commitment that Pakistan is fully ready to populate the sports arena.
There is a need for all the relevant sports federations and institutions to work together to identify talent from the grassroots level and provide them with the latest training so that Pakistan not only emerges as the best host but also makes the country famous by achieving a prominent position in the medal race. The 14th South Asian Games will be held in Pakistan from 3 to 11 April 2027 next year, which will undoubtedly prove to be a golden chapter in Pakistani sports history. On this historic occasion, Asghar Ali Mubarak, founding president of the South Asian Sports Journalists Association (SASJA) and senior journalist, enthusiastically welcomed the decisions of the council and termed it a “sports revolution” for the region. He said that these games will not just be a race for medals, but will also be an unparalleled means of strengthening cultural, diplomatic, and people-to-people ties between the countries of South Asia. Now is the time for the entire nation, athletes, media, and government to come together to make this historic occasion a success and show the world that Pakistan is changing and moving forward.
