Field Marshal Asim Munir’s highly productive visit to Iran: expectations
(Asghar Ali Mubarak)
Field Marshal Asim Munir’s highly productive visit to Iran is not just a traditional military visit but also a reflection of Pakistan’s independent, balanced, and realistic foreign and defense policy.
The highly productive talks with Tehran’s leadership are a sign that Pak-Iran relations have now entered a new, stable, and strategic era.
According to senior Pakistani diplomatic analyst Asghar Ali Mubarak, the Iranian government has described the visit of Pakistan’s Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir to Iran as highly productive and beneficial. According to a statement issued by the Iranian Presidential Office, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s visit to Iran was highly productive, during which significant diplomatic achievements were made.
According to Iranian Presidential Office official Seyyed Mehdi Tabatabaei, important and significant diplomatic progress has been made during the visit to Iran, while the results of this visit will start to emerge soon.
The statement said that Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s visit to Iran will help further advance diplomatic relations and cooperation between the two countries.
The Iranian presidential office did not provide further details of the visit, but described it as an important and positive development in relations between Pakistan and Iran.
Meanwhile, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, in a statement released on the social media platform X, said that Field Marshal Asim Munir had a very positive and fruitful meeting with Iranian President Masoud Peshmerga. Mohsin Naqvi said that the meeting discussed the Iran-US conflict, tensions in the Middle East, future course of action, and necessary steps to restore the Islamabad MoU, so that a comprehensive solution to the conflict could be achieved. According to the Interior Minister, the Iranian President openly expressed his government’s position and reservations, while the parties had a constructive discussion on relevant issues. Important progress was made in the meeting, and the meeting ended in a very positive atmosphere. He expressed hope that this development will help pave the way for further progress and lasting peace in the region. The far-reaching effects of this visit will be clearly visible on the politics and economy of the region in the coming days. The relations between Pakistan and Iran are not just a matter of geographical proximity, but are rooted in shared history, faith, civilization, and enduring cultural ties. With the emerging new trends in geopolitics, changing alignments in the Middle East, and the need for the two neighboring countries to be on the same page for the establishment of lasting peace in the region, it has become the most important need of the hour. At this crucial juncture, the recent visit of the Pakistani military leadership to Iran is of exceptional importance. Keeping in mind the strategic situation of the region, the recent visit of Army Chief Field Marshal General Syed Asim Munir to Tehran has proven to be a key milestone in taking military, defense, intelligence, and economic cooperation between the two brotherly countries to new heights. The visit is being described as highly “productive” by international diplomacy and strategic experts. During his visit to Iran, Field Marshal Asim Munir held detailed meetings with the Chief of General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Baqeri, the President of Iran, and other top military and political leaders. The main focus of these meetings was on the following key points:
Border Security and Counter-Terrorism:
Further strengthening of security mechanisms to maintain the long Pak-Iran border as a “border of peace and friendship”.
Enhancing intelligence sharing to prevent the territory of both countries from being used against each other.
Regional Stability and the Afghan Situation:
Developing a joint strategy to control the changing situation in Afghanistan, emerging security threats, and the activities of banned organizations.
Economic and Trade Relations: Establishing border markets, promoting legal trade, and formulating a joint operational strategy to eliminate smuggling.
A new chapter in defense and military cooperation:
Joint Security Mechanism: The biggest achievement of this visit is the restoration of trust between the two countries at the military level and the promotion of security cooperation. In the talks held in Tehran, there was complete agreement that terrorism is a common enemy of both countries, which can only be combated through joint efforts.
Intelligence Coordination:
A system for timely exchange of information against cross-border terrorist elements, especially those operating in the border areas of Balochistan and Sistan and Baluchistan, was finalized.
Joint Task Force:
It was decided to use technology to modernize border surveillance and make joint border patrols more active. Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline and Economic Prospects;
Along with strategic and defense issues, this visit is also of great importance on the economic front.
Constructive discussions have taken place at the military leadership level regarding the Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline (IP Project), which had been stalled for a long time due to international pressure and technical reasons. Its revival is indispensable to meet Pakistan’s energy needs.
In addition, there was talk of promoting cooperation as “Sister Ports” instead of competition between the ports of Chabahar and Gwadar, so that Iran can also benefit from the CPEC and regional connectivity network.
Future Expectations and Impact on the Region;
Field Marshal Asim Munir’s visit to Iran has positive expectations in the diplomatic and strategic circles of both countries:
Establishment of peace and security: Tensions on the borders will end, which will provide economic security to the local population. Balance in the Middle East:
After the Saudi-Iran agreement brokered by China, strong relations between Pakistan and Iran will help maintain the unity of the Muslim Ummah and the balance of power in the region.
Discouragement of terrorist elements: It will help break the networks of RAW and other anti-national agencies that try to create misunderstandings between the two brotherly countries using the Pak-Iran border.
Field Marshal Asim Munir’s visit to Iran was not just a traditional military visit, but it is a reflection of Pakistan’s independent, balanced, and realistic foreign and defense policy. The very sound and fruitful talks with the leadership of Tehran are a sign that Pak-Iran relations have now entered a new, stable, and strategic era. The far-reaching effects of this visit on the politics and economy of the region will be clearly visible in the coming days. According to Mehdi Rahimi, head of the Iranian Parliament’s News Agency, Iran has also received an invitation to join the joint defense arrangements of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey, which is being considered. According to Pakistani diplomatic analyst Asghar Ali Mubarak, economic partnership is also important between Pakistan and Iran, along with defense and security cooperation. The two countries are working on expanding border infrastructure, trade, market access, and energy links, while the target of increasing bilateral trade volume from $3 billion to $10 billion is also under consideration. Pakistan has once again intensified its diplomatic efforts to promote peace and security in the region and reduce tensions between Iran and the United States. Earlier, Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran along with a high-level official delegation, where he held important meetings with the Iranian leadership. Field Marshal Asim Munir met with Iranian President Masoud Peshkeshian, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran Major General Mohsen Rezaei.
In his meeting with Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the situation of regional peace and stability was discussed. Qalibaf said that the United States did not fulfill its obligations under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which affected regional stability and further weakened trust in Washington. Iran is committed to implementing the provisions of the MoU and calls on the US to fulfill its commitments.
Field Marshal Asim Munir reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to continue its efforts to restore regional peace and stability. During the visit, the regional situation was also discussed in a meeting with Major General Mohsen Rezaei. The Iranian official expressed distrust in the US, saying that Iran is maintaining its control over the security of the Strait of Hormuz and Washington will have to change its behavior and fulfill its promises under the agreement. Field Marshal Asim Munir, while mentioning the long-standing brotherly relations between Pakistan and Iran, assured Islamabad of continuing its efforts to improve security and stability on the shared border.
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baqai said in a statement released on social media that the Field Marshal’s visit is a continuation of Pakistan’s continuous efforts for peace in the region. Issues of mutual interest and strengthening bilateral relations are also being discussed in the meetings. According to the Arab news agency ‘Al-Arabiya’, the Pakistani army chief also conveyed important American messages to Iranian officials during this visit so that the stalled diplomatic talks between Washington and Tehran could be resumed. Reuters described his visit as part of efforts to promote regional peace and stability. One of the main objectives of the visit is to try to bring Iran back to talks. This is Field Marshal Asim Munir’s fourth visit to Iran this year. He had previously visited Iran in April and May for diplomatic efforts, while in July he arrived in Tehran to attend the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. When the situation became more tense earlier this year, Pakistan emerged as a key mediator and paved the way for the ‘Islamabad Agreement’ (MoU) between Pakistan, Iran and the United States in June. Under this agreement, a sixty-day period was set for talks on key issues related to Iran’s nuclear program and easing sanctions. Under this framework, high-level talks were also held in Switzerland, in which Pakistan and Qatar participated as mediators, but no final agreement could be reached within the stipulated time. Despite the expiration of the 60 days on August 17, no major progress could be made. However, Iranian spokesman Esmail Baqai said that the Islamabad agreement did not include a mandatory 60-day deadline and that if the two sides could not reach a consensus, this period could be extended.
On the other hand, Pakistan maintains that the Islamabad framework is still important and can provide a basis whenever the two sides are ready to talk again. Regional security, bilateral relations and especially the situation in the Strait of Hormuz were also among the important topics during Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir’s visit. This significant progress is coming at a time when tensions between the US and Iran continue to persist. US President Donald Trump has hinted at tougher economic measures against Iran, while Tehran has vowed not to bow to any kind of pressure. On the other hand, the Iranian leadership is also calling the security of the Strait of Hormuz a key issue, while maritime trade and energy supplies are already affected due to the ongoing tensions in the region. In the past, Islamabad has played an important role in brokering a ceasefire and negotiations between Iran and the United States, and now Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts are once again underway to break the deadlock.
