Pakistan Fields 20-Member Squad for Glasgow Commonwealth Games; Arshad Nadeem to Lead Charge

British High Commissioner Jane Marriott has announced that Pakistan will field a 20-member athlete contingent for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, featuring Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem. She made this declaration during a special pre-games celebratory event hosted in Islamabad to honor the participating athletes and promote global sports diplomacy.

The British Envoy highlighted that the Glasgow Commonwealth Games will serve as a massive global celebration, bringing nations together under a unified platform to showcase their unique cultural identities. Pakistan’s 20-member squad will compete across six sports disciplines, with global javelin sensation Arshad Nadeem leading the national contingent following his historic Olympic gold triumph. Alongside Nadeem in athletics, Pakistan has named Mohammad Yasir, Faiqa Riaz, Noureen Hussain, Ansar Abbas, Muhammad Akhtar, and Muhammad Ismail.

The national boxing line-up includes Afzal Khan, Qudratullah, Samama Rehman Butt, Fatima Zahra, and Malaika Zahid. Pakistan’s swimming campaign will be driven by Jahanara Nabi, Hareem Malik, Hamza Asif, and Muhammad Ahmed Durrani. The remaining squad features veteran judoka Shah Hussain Shah in judo, Shehzad Ali in gymnastics, alongside Maqsood Waseem and Muhammad Ayub Qureshi representing the country in lawn bowls.

Reflecting on the broader impact of sports, Marriott emphasized that the Commonwealth Games act as a catalyst for friendships between nations and inspire the next generation of global role models. Drawing a parallel to international sporting excellence, she also lauded the England football team’s sensational run to the FIFA World Cup final, while acknowledging Spain’s ultimate victory in the tournament.
